Terms of Use
A plain-language summary of the terms for using Zella. A fuller legal version is on the way.
Your Safety
Zella is an academic planner, not a mental health or crisis service. If you are ever going through something serious, we want to make sure you know where to get real support.
Zella checks for language related to suicide or self-harm in the things you write or say to it: notes and titles on an event, a goal or a goal step, your Daily Big 3, a meditation reflection and anything you speak to the microphone. If it finds something, it will pause and point you to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a free, confidential resource available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by call or text. We will not automatically notify your parents, your school or anyone else. You will always be given the choice of what to do next.
Zella is not a monitoring tool and it cannot catch everything. It looks for particular words and phrases, so it will miss things. It is no substitute for a real person noticing that you are having a hard time.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available to everyone in the United States. Call 988 or text 988 at any time.
Zella is not a substitute for professional mental health support. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911.
Where Zella is available
Zella is currently available to users in the United States only.
Zella is still growing
Zella is young software that we improve all the time. Things may change and a feature may have a rough edge here or there. We'd love your feedback to help make it better.
Your account
You're responsible for keeping your login safe and for the activity on your account. Zella is for ages 13 and up.
Be kind, use it fairly
Please use Zella for its intended purpose and don't try to misuse, disrupt or access it in ways it isn't meant to be used.
Connecting calendars
Zella can import a calendar you connect (like a Canvas, Blackboard or other iCal link) by fetching and storing those events in your account. It can also sync your Zella schedule out to your phone's own calendar through a private link. Only connect calendars you have the right to use. Phone sync is one-way, so you can disconnect an imported calendar or reset your sync link anytime. How this data is handled is covered on our Privacy page.
Your privacy
How we handle your information is explained on our Privacy page. In short, your mood and energy never leave your device. Your period and headache data stay on it too, apart from a simple yes/no summary a student can choose to share with a parent.
Changes
As Zella grows, these terms may be updated. We'll post the current version here.
